Do plug-in hybrids also take gas?

by Robert Beas - Posted 1 year ago

Yes, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) also take gasoline in addition to electricity. Unlike fully electric vehicles that rely solely on electricity for power, PHEVs have both an electric motor and a gasoline engine.
The gasoline engine in a PHEV serves as a backup power source for the vehicle. When the battery charge is low or when the vehicle needs additional power, the gasoline engine will automatically turn on to provide additional power to the electric motor. This allows the PHEV to continue driving even when the battery charge is depleted or when additional power is needed, such as during high-speed driving or when climbing hills.
In addition to using gasoline as a backup power source, PHEVs also typically have a traditional gasoline fuel tank that can be refueled at gas stations. The size of the fuel tank and the fuel economy of the gasoline engine can vary depending on the specific PHEV model.
One of the benefits of owning a PHEV is the ability to switch between electric and gasoline power depending on driving needs. This allows PHEV drivers to take longer trips without having to worry about running out of battery charge, and also offers the potential for improved fuel economy compared to traditional gasoline-only vehicles.
